‘Vision Van’ Drives Home the Importance of Eye Exams

Everyone has a vision.

For Dr. Rohit Varma, it’s a world where preventable blindness is a thing of the past.

The world-renowned eye care specialist oversees the CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center’s Southern California Eyecare and Vision Research Institute, which brings eye care to underdiagnosed and undertreated individuals with visual impairment throughout Los Angeles County and beyond.

“The Vision Van provides a unique public service to the communities of L.A. and surrounding counties by providing access to vision screening and care,” he says. “In the process, we’re increasing awareness of the importance of eye health and the causes of preventable vision loss.”

The van brings the expertise of ophthalmologists and other specialists to people unable to obtain vision care due to lack of income, transportation or insurance. “Screening can be provided to over 100 individuals a day at any given community event,” says Dr. Varma, who plans to add additional vehicles as the program expands.

According to the World Health Organization, 80% of vision impairment is avoidable. More the reason to have your eyes checked regularly. A vision plan from your association and AMBA can save you hundreds of dollars on exams and eyewear, not to mention the health of your eyes.

If you’re as passionate about eye care as Dr. Varma, start with yourself. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
